Presenting Non-Fiction Week!

I’m a book blogger, and I support this message!

There’s not many guidelines on my blog, but when it comes to counting how many books I read each year, I’m stricter on myself than other bloggers. Yes, it sounds impressive when you tell people that your final count is in the three-digits, or at least any number higher than one a week. And if all those reads are substantial, then good for you!

However, I’m usually skeptical because some readers like to pad their lists with poems, short stories, children’s books, novelty books, or anything else that you can finish in a few hours. I’ve done it every now and then, like with David Levithan’s charming The Lover’s Dictionarywhich I wish was much longer!

But for the most part, I choose typical-sized novels. My average page count last year was 300 pages per book. I’ve also read a ton of Japanese manga in my day, but as much as I love graphic novels, I just don’t feel like counting them when their word count is extremely low.

Is my self-imposed limitation silly? Perhaps. There’s one genre that I feel doesn’t get enough recognition in book-blogging: non-fiction. Oftentimes, they’re just as lengthy as their fictional counterparts, and just as intriguing. Sometimes a text gains a ton of buzz with journalists, like Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In, but the book-blogging community tends to exclusively discuss fiction, since it’s easy to escape into imaginary universes.

That doesn’t mean that we’re not reading non-fiction. From historical biographies to sociological research to self-help books, there’s a ton of interesting stuff to read out there. So I thought that I would review the five most pertinent to me, one for each weekday. Even though I don’t count them on Books I’ve Read, it’s nice to remind ourselves of all the “side-reading” we do, so to speak.

Here’s the plan for the Book Club Babe Non-Fiction Week:

  • Monday: Generation Me by Jean M. Twenge, Ph.D.
  • Tuesday: 20 Something, 20 Everything by Christine Hassler
  • Wednesday: Life After College by Jenny Blake
  • Thursday: Full Frontal Feminism by Jessica Valenti
  • Friday: On Writing by Stephen King

Be sure to discuss your favorite works of non-fiction in the comments and how you feel about the genre as a whole. Then check back each day this week for a bonus book review!

Blog Update: I will no longer accept books for review

Hi readers!

Book Club Babe has undergone a ton of changes, with its new logo and layout. Unfortunately, I will have to alter one more thing: my review policy.

It turns out that I need to stop adding to my to-read list, as I have eight books on my shelves waiting for me. I also had a moment of weakness when I learned that my favorite musician, Davey Havok from the band AFI, released a book called Pop Kids two weeks ago. How could I not immediately order it?

(If you haven’t discovered the awesomeness of AFI, enjoy!)

Anyways, I also read an insightful article by the Insatiable Booksluts regarding vanity presses. Sadly, I have learned that I do not have the capabilities to closely monitor whether a book has been self-published, either outright or through a vanity press, so I am following suit and no longer accepting books for review. I might miss out on some great novels that have been traditionally published, but a lack of time and resources forces me to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

So unfortunately, out goes the review policy despite not yet reviewing any submitted books. Sometimes strength lies in acknowledging what you can and cannot handle, so I am making my to-read list a priority. No more impulse book buys until I catch up!

I can catch up…right?

And what about catching up with all of you? How’s life? What are you reading? Any good recommendations? Let’s talk!

Welcome to the new Book Club Babe! (And why my brother is better than yours)

Book Club Babe is back and better than ever! Take a look around! I’ve got a new logo and look, as well as an official Terms & Conditions and an updated About Me page. I’ve also purchased the domain bookclubbabe.net, so remember to add it to your bookmarks! A few tweaks are still in the works in regards to expanding on social media (like my new Facebook fan page!), but I was too excited to wait any longer!

Another way I’m working to effectively and cohesively professionalize my personal brand is to “come out” and reveal my identity. I’m obviously not off the grid or anything, so goodness knows I’m no secret agent, but I’ve never directly gone by my real name.

It’s Alyssa Jarrett, by the way, and it’s a pleasure to re-make your acquaintance! As someone just out of grad school and adjusting to the working world, I don’t have a huge online presence, but I encourage you to check out my About.Me website and follow me on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Pinterest.

I owe all these awesome blog changes to my only, and therefore, favorite sibling Nick Jarrett. Before I jump back into book blogging, I thought I would repay the favor by sharing just a few of the reasons why my brother is the best!

Looking like the pro he is!

Looking like the pro he is!

1. My brother is a kick-ass artist.

This one’s a given, considering the wonders he’s done for Book Club Babe. But just like I’ve always had literary inclinations, Nick’s been the artistic one in the family. He’s currently a graphic design student at Fresno State who does freelance work in his free time. With tattoos, gauges, and a morbid sense of humor, “creative” is a total understatement for this hardcore kid.

2. My brother created his own clothing company.

Over two years ago, Nick founded his clothing line I Scream Clothing, which specializes in colorful T-shirts for the hardcore scene. If you’re looking to wear fun, energetic, unique designs, look no further!

3. My brother is an awesome paintballer.

Nick’s also the captain of a paintball team called Genesis, which he formed in 2009 with his friends. He’s a snake player who’s helped Genesis win 1st place in their RPL division at Fresno in 2010 and at Oceanside in 2011. They’ve currently advanced to Division 3 in WCPPL. With my father as coach, paintball is a huge part of my family.

4. My brother will always be a geeky kid at heart.

Between his addiction to Pokemon and the latest tech gadgets, Nick’s a self-professed geek. His most recent hobby is live-streaming video games, so it’s only a matter of time before he’s a YouTube sensation! We’ve bonded over horror games like Slender and Amnesia, so check out us above, where he gives me a  Book Club Babe shout-out!

So that’s why my brother is better than yours! You can get a hold of him on his Facebook and Twitter, but please let him know what you think of the blog redesign in the comments! And even though you know my real name now, I’ll always be Book Club Babe!

I’ve finally created my review policy!

Creating a review policy has always been one thing on my to-do list for my blog, and it wasn’t until a recent request did I actually make time to formulate one. Please take some time to click on the “Review Policy” page to familiarize yourself with my terms and conditions.

I appreciate anyone who is interested in having me review his/her work, and I think you’ll find my policy comparable to other book blogs. If anyone has any questions or suggestions to make regarding my review policy, please leave a comment on this post.

Again, thank you to all my wonderful readers–you make blogging such a treat!

Sincerely,

Book Club Babe

Blog Tag, I’m It!

Ok, I’ve been nominated for quite a few blogging “awards,” and I’m usually horrible at forwarding the virtual chain letter and nominating more people. But this is the first time I’ve ever been blog-tagged, so I’ll do my due diligence and play! I was tagged by Tanya from Green Paw-Paw, so I’ll be answering her questions.

So what’s Blog Tag? Here’s how it works:

The Rules

1. I must post the rules.

2. I must answer the questions the tagger listed for me.

3. I must create (or reuse) 11 questions for those I tag.

4. I must tag 11 people.

5. I must let them know they’ve been tagged.

The Questions

1. If you had the power to ban a certain book, or certain kinds of books, however productive the outcome may be (think Twilight or Oliver’s Story), even if you knew a huge majority of readers might thank you for it, would you?

Easy. I would love for the 50 Shades of Grey bandwagon to die a horribly violent death, so I would ban the series and revoke E.L. James’ writing license since she has certainly abused her title as an author with her crappy books. Then I would go tell all her delusional fans to visit AdultFanFiction.net, because that’s where this story belongs. They get their fill of poorly written, often disturbing erotica, and I never have to hear the phrase “inner goddess” again. Win-win.

2. What is one book you wish you had written?

What a question! Well, if I could have contributed a mere paragraph to Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, I’d call my life a success. But the books I wish I had written are the ones that exist as mere ideas in my notebooks. Hopefully, they’ll become more than ideas and somebody one day will wish she had written my books. Fingers crossed anyway!

3. You have finally achieved world domination and as new king/queen of the world, you need to fashion yourself a crown. But of course, you’re too cool for precious metals and the like. What would your crown be/be made of?

Um, mithril? If it’s good enough for Frodo, it’s good enough for me!

4. Have you ever wondered how a doggie biscuit tastes and wanted to try?

I guess I’ve wondered, but I’ve made doggie biscuits before, so I know they’d be pretty dry and bland. But maybe that’s just because cooking’s not my forte.

5. Is there a book that you weren’t able to complete for whatever reason, but lied about it and told people you did? Which one?

Pride and Prejudice. I’ve only read 50 pages, but I’ll nod my head when people talk about it because I’ve heard the story enough times. These conversations usually go like this: “Yes, of course, I’ve read it…Mr. Darcy? I know, what a catch…But not as good as Heathcliff, amiright? No? Well, never mind then…”

6. Your choice of instant pick-me-up food?

Mashed potatoes and gravy. Jamba Juice Caribbean Passion smoothies. Dark chocolate. Bagels. This Armenian lasagna dish called souboreg. Nutella. (Obviously, not all at once or mixed together!)

7. If there was an appendage you could add to the human anatomy (wings, talons, a tail…), what would it be?

Wings, but only if they could be retractable. I don’t need people running into each other’s wings or leaving feathers all over the place. Put those suckers back in when you’re done with them!

8. If you could go back in time and stop a famous event from taking place, what would it be and why?

I’ll be completely biased here and say the Armenian Genocide. You can read my post about this tragedy here. Knowledge is power, so do your research and help achieve global recognition. Please and thanks!

9,10,11. All the book characters you’ve ever loved are people in your immediate friend circle. Who would you turn to:

a) to make a bucket list with you and go all over the world fulfilling each item on the list?

I think that the best travel buddies would be Merry and Pippin. Second breakfasts all around!

b) to plonk down next to you on that patch of moon land you guys bought, feel awesome, and somehow keep each other from dying of boredom until the next space shuttle comes to pick you up?

Does manga count? Because in that case, I would pick Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club. He’s got a never-ending supply of energy, and he’s great eye candy too. In fact, bring the whole host club, and we’ll throw a moon party!

c) when the world thinks you’re responsible for the attack on the entire human race by some random scary evil alien monsters and you are the only one who knows what they want but nobody will listen to you and you need somebody to help you save the world?

Ender knows aliens better than anyone, but I think he might be a little twerp, so I’ll choose Artemis Fowl instead. He’s my favorite boy genius, and he’s saved the world so many times already. Can’t wait to read the finale of that series soon!

My Questions

1. You have been put in charge of creating a new national holiday. What’s it called, and how do we celebrate?

2. You have been given an unlimited budget to make or remake a book’s film adaptation. Which book do you choose, and who would you cast?

3. Robots have now become our personal servants, but here’s the catch. You only get one robot, and it can only do one chore. What will it be?

4. It’s stay-in-and-do-nothing-night. What’s your reality show guilty pleasure?

5. You have been given a “Death Note” (look it up) where you can write any person’s name in it and that person will die. You can even describe their death in graphic detail. But you only can write down one name…who will it be?

6. Which Disney animal sidekick would you want as a friend?

7. You’re now in charge of a celebrity’s Twitter account. Who do you want to Tweet for, and what would your first Tweet be?

8. If you were a fragrance, what would you smell like?

9. If you could eat any one food and not gain weight or overall health issues, what would you eat?

10. What’s the one phrase or cliché that drives you the craziest?

11. You’ve hit the jackpot and won a romantic evening with the sexy celebrity of your choosing, but he/she hates your favorite book. Like burned it because they just could not stand the sight of it. Proceed canoodling anyway?

Ready…Set…GO! Anyone else reading this who wasn’t tagged is more than welcome to play along! Share your answers in the comment section!

My 1st Blogging Anniversary!

All my blogging anniversary needs is a baby panda!

So I’ve decided to forego this week’s Masterpiece Monday, because tomorrow will be my first blogging anniversary! When I became “Book Club Babe” a year ago, I would never have guessed how fun and rewarding it would be. In the grand scheme of things, my blog may not make that much of an impact, but I’m proud to say that I’ve gained over 14,000 views from all over the world. My readers are the best a blogger could ask for, and I’ve decided to make a better effort this year to engage in more conversations with them.

To celebrate this important milestone, I’m recapping my three most popular posts. Feel free to follow the links to read them in their entirety.

Fifty Shades of Grey: My Rant on Crappy Books and the People Who Buy Them. It looks like I’ve caught the Fifty Shades bandwagon and shook things up a bit with my criticisms. Luckily, my readers have awesome taste in literature and shared their own complaints of the crappy series. It felt so good to preach to the choir! (Originally posted 4/18/12)

Most Hated Words in the English Language? I had discussed The Huffington Post’s list of disgusting-sounding words. You agreed with the grossness of “moist,” “hubby,” and “fetus.” It seemed that anything too medical was also bad on the ears. However, it was nice to end on a good note with our favorite words. (Originally posted 8/2/11)

Book Review: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. This was a popular read among my readers, who enjoyed the unique photographs. I’m so glad that I read this novel, which I borrowed from a friend after she recommended it, because it was a good experience to read outside my comfort zone. I rated it 4 out of 5, so make sure to put it on your to-read lists! (Originally posted 4/5/12)

So has anyone else reached the first blogging anniversary? Let me know how it felt, and we can virtually toast to another year of books and blogging!

Book Club Babe went print this fall!

So I have finished all of my assignments in my undergraduate Desktop Publishing class. We created a variety of flyers and brochures with InDesign, and our final project was a four-page newsletter. I chose to feature some of my favorite blog posts, so I thought I’d share the pics with you:

Page 1

Page 2

Page 3

Page 4

I didn’t realize how long my blog posts were until I saw them in print, so unfortunately I had to cut a bit from each article. I’ve designed newspaper pages before, so I wouldn’t say this newsletter is my best work, but I enjoyed the whole process of creating it. I hope you like it too!

Calling all bloggers! I need homework help!

So my first week of school has finished, and my professor loved the idea that my friend/colleague  and I had for our independent study. We want to create a print magazine about social media, but we’re still in the brainstorming stage. We need to narrow down the topic a bit, by having a certain theme for this debut issue.

I’d like to structure it like any other women’s magazine, possibly with an upside-down structure, one side covering the good aspects of social media, and the other side covering the evil. Social media includes social networking sites like Facebook, Google+, and LinkedIn, as well as blogging/micro-blogging sites like WordPress, Blogger, and Twitter.

Here’s some possible ideas:

GOOD

  1. Connecting with friends and family
  2. Long distance relationships
  3. 24 hour news access
  4. Networking and job searching
  5. Expanding start-up businesses
  6. Sharing niche interests
EVIL
  1. Social networking narcissism
  2. Cyber-bullying
  3. Stress and depression over upkeeping profile and friends lists
  4. Lack of interpersonal communication
  5. Intruding advertisements
  6. Stalking and addiction

Throw out ideas if you have them, as well as topics you’d like to be covered in a social media magazine, because I’m sure I left a lot out! We’ll also be conducting interviews, so if you’d like to volunteer and get the word out about your blog or business, let me know!

Thanks!
