Top Ten Songs That I Wish Were Books

Yesterday’s Top Ten Tuesday topic from the meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish was so awesome that I just had to participate, even if that meant blogging belatedly due to my hectic schedule. The book blogging community is all abuzz on this particularly intriguing question: Based on their lyrics, which of our favorite songs would make excellent novels?

I love listening to music on the road and am especially fond of Japanese and Korean pop; however, for the sake of simplicity and avoiding inaccurate translations, I’ll be focusing on Western songs. The first eight are my own selections, and the last two are reader suggestions, since I’m not as familiar with the genres of horror and children’s books.

It was a challenge to limit this list to just ten, but here we go!

If we run this light, take a little life, no one will care at all. We can burn it and leave, for we are the beautiful thieves. No one suspects at all.

1. Best Crime Thriller: AFI, “Beautiful Thieves”

Don’t you go carry on with your life. It was a one-night stand before I woke up next to you.

2. Best Modern Romance: All Time Low, “Don’t You Go”

I’m the Barbie on the boardwalk, summer of ’45…

3. Best Historical Fiction: Taylor Swift, “Starlight”

I’m just a holy fool. Oh baby, it’s so cruel, but I’m still in love with Judas, baby.

4. Best Historical Romance: Lady Gaga, “Judas”

I found myself in the fire-burned hills in the land of a billion lights.

5. Best Coming of Age: 30 Seconds to Mars, “City of Angels”

Where is your boy tonight? I hope he is a gentleman. Maybe he won’t find out what I know. You were the last good thing about this part of town.

6. Best Young Adult Romance: Fall Out Boy, “Grand Theft Autumn”

We are the rust upon your gears. We are the insect in your ears. We crawl, we crawl, we crawl all over you.

7. Best Dystopia: Rise Against, “Re-Education (Through Labor)”

When I was a young boy, my father took me into the city to see a marching band. He said, “Son, when you grow up, would you be the savior of the broken, the beaten and the damned.” He said, “Will you defeat them, your demons and all the non-believers, the plans that they have made, because one day I’ll leave you, a phantom to lead you in the summer to join the Black Parade.”

8. Best Young Adult Fantasy: My Chemical Romance, “Welcome to the Black Parade”

The knife slides down to the tip of my tongue. I’m finding pleasure in watching you writhe.

9. Best Horror: Alesana, “The Murderer”

I’d ask my friends to come and see an octopus’ garden with me. I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’ garden in the shade.

10. Best Children’s Book: The Beatles, “Octopus’ Garden”

So those are my top ten songs I’d like to see as novels! Which ones would you add to my list? Share your thoughts in the comments, because I’d love to discover some new bands!
